As a young man I enjoyed playing rugby league, distance running and weight training. Consequently I incurred many minor injuries which I ignored and trained through. However by the time I reached the age of 23 I had developed constant lower back pain and sciatica, and my life was miserable. After first trying physiotherapy, massage, chiropractic and osteopathy I came across Bowen Therapy and to my great surprise the gentle movements across the muscle attachments somehow allowed the lower back to relax and the sciatica to disappear.
I had the opportunity to learn Bowen therapy in 1994 whilst living in Australia and although easy to learn it has taken me many years to become proficient and to this day I am happily refining my skills.
Thanks to Bowen therapy and several other modalities, Orthobionomy, Cranio Sacral Therapy and Trigger Point Therapy I am pursuing a career that I find is hugely rewarding and stimulating.
In 2008 I started working at the 'Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre' treating refugees who had experienced severe conditions in their own country. In this environment I saw first hand how mental and physical health are so intertwined. By sharing clients with psychologists who use interventions like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness Training or Narrative Therapy I noticed clients had a much greater resolution of muscular skeletal conditions, especially neck and shoulder and lower back issues. Today my practice involves integrating the body and mind as part of the healing process.
In 2015 I left the MRRC and moved to Whangarei where I set up my practice from my home in Parahaki, I continue to learn and be inspired by the human body and how it can adapt evolve and heal itself.
